Culture Politics: The Story of Native Land Claims in Alaska, by Kirk Dombrowski

This book traces the history of indigenous land claims in Southeast Alaska. Based on three years of residence and over two decades of research and writing, Culture Politics lays out how Native land claims in Alaska came about, and why they have proven so divisive for many Alaska Native communities. Reframing and going beyond Dombrowski's earlier book, Against Culture, the current volume looks in depth at the trials and tribulations of subsistence hunters and fishers in villages like Hydaburg, Kake, Klawock, and Hoonah. Each of these communities has faced the same onslaught of timber harvesting and the collapse of the local fishery. Some have grown as a result, while others have shrunk. And some have spawned radical Pentecostal churches that have taken a stance against Native culture. Reactions like these are surprising, more so when they are most stridently advocated by Natives themselves. This book describes why this is so, and traces these processes back to the Land Claims process itself. Culture Politics is aimed at both popular and academic audiences. While the social and political processes it describes are complex, the language of the text is intended for ordinary adult readers. Those interested in Native American affairs, the history of Alaska, or the effect of environmental development on northern communities will find much to appreciate in this compelling, first-hand telling of life on the edge of America. Reviews of Dombrowski's last book on Alaska: “Dombrowski’s ethnography provides a timely intervention for developing a comparative understanding of liberal state interventions in the sphere of indigenous rights. He provides us with a nuanced understanding of the post-colonial world of indigenous peoples in his study of the Tlingit and Haida of southeast Alaska today. . . . This ethnography deserves to be read widely. It is most powerful in dealing with the internal fractures evident in indigenous communities, but does not ignore the interplay that exists between legislative processes, the exigencies of market forces, and the legacies of over-exploited finite resources.”—Barry Morris, Australian Journal of Anthropology (Barry Morris Australian Journal of Anthropology ) "Well written and based on diligent research, the book will appeal to anyone interested in contemporary Native American issues. [Recommended for] all levels and collections."—Choice (Choice ) “Anyone who has attempted to sort out the intricacies of Native American Sovereignty movements or more generally, the nuances of Federal-Indian law, will immediately appreciate Dombrowski’s trenchant formulations, the hallmark quality of which is a penetrating analysis of the ways that nativism and world capitalism are neither wholly separate nor wholly antagonistic but, rather, frequently connected and interdependent in surprising and unsettling ways.”—Greg Johnson, The Journal of Religion (The Journal of Religion ) “Against Culture is most productively surprising in the multiple ways the analysis grows beyond both its theoretical origins and its ethnography, to become widely useful, particularly for the development of new ways of understanding indigenous peoples’ continuing histories.”—Gerald Sider, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

misguided and worse in the midst of tremendous pressures political and social
By Husky Dawg
A difficult set of issues about Fundamentalist Christian missions in Alaska and an Alaska Native culture trying to move out the label of dark, primitive, misguided and worse in the midst of tremendous pressures political and social. The good news is the author is trying to cast light on a complex issue typically ignored. Wish all Christian Pastors, Deacons, Missionaries, Priests, etc. would tackle this issue while understanding this text is open to criticism, it is still casting light on an aspect of Alaska Native life that is both powerful and misrepresented.

“How did I get here?” Those were the words that David Hope thought as his boat, Summer Heat, was tossed in a storm on its way to the Bahamas. This book is the true story of his life, from his first experiences in sailing through his career as a Chesterfield County, Virginia Police Officer up until his ship was caught in a devastating storm. It’s a story of humor, heroics, good luck and bad luck that recounts the tale of David and his crew (including Jammer the Wonder Dog), as they struggled to survive on Summer Heat. I could not put it down
By ranger
I love the way that Dave integrated his police story with his love of sailing story. I thought I knew the story of the loss of "Summer Heat" but I only knew the condensed version. Wow! What an adventure. This is a must read.

Awesome Read!
By Robert A. Fielder
I know Dave as a friend. He has talked a little about his experiences, but nothing compares with this true life story of his police career and his ill fated trip to the Bahamas when he lost his boat and almost lost his life.

You do not need to be a sailor to enjoy this book. Dave explains all in laymen terms.

You will chuckle, smile, experience a sea rescue and perhaps cry at the loss of his friend, Jammer...I did

A great true story!
By Mike Marrion
I first met Dave Hope in 1978 when I got out of the Chesterfield County Police academy. I worked with him, then for him, for many years until his retirement. We pretty much lost contact after that with the exception of the occasional picnic for retirees. As young invincibles, we enjoyed motorcycles, the water and frosty malt beverages. Somehow we are still here to tell our tales. Having been on a few excursions on his “blow bote”, as I called it, I’m glad I never got the bug to be pushed around by a wind that was unpredictable and always seemed to be blowing the wrong way. Sailing seemed like a lot of work and I couldn’t catch any fish while we were heeling over. I knew of his misadventure, but none of the details until I read this book. I finished it one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. Although unfamiliar with all the lines and sails on a “blow bote”, Dave tells this harrowing tale in a manner that a non-sailor can still clearly visualize. If it were not for the fact that he wrote this exceptional account, I wouldn’t have bet anyone would have survived this oceanic adventure. It could have had a significantly different ending. I’m glad he didn’t invite me, because if he told me he had a “bote” full of beer and we were going to the Bahamas, I may have been tempted. As Dave was always very serious about the finer points of sailing and I was so cavalier, I wouldn’t have made a suitable crewmember. Thank goodness for that! This is a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. RIP Jammer, you were a “wonder dog”.

Stet, leader of the ranchers, embodies Old West values and uses high-tech methods to stop the pipeline to the aquifer. The Lounge Lizards, two Las Vegas cops, try to remove Stet as the opposition leader by framing him for a car bombing and a murder. About Time!!
By Mr. R. Linn
I finished this novel this morning, I loved it. It deals with so many current important issues, the image of a ruling elite (police, govt, etc) who make the rules at will in their favor and destroy anyone who gets in their way. Not being an American the impression I get that it is quite brave to write a novel that tackles these issues - almost like a current day 'grapes of wrath' for our current economic and political slump. I see it as a forum to expose govt intrusion in a courageous way through Dolly's 'paranoia'. If only we had more victories such as Stet's in real life. Anyway I am in no way a literary critic, but as an average reader I can only say I enjoyed it greatly! If only we had more writers willing to 'fight the good fight' - isn't this novel an example of the novelist as social consciousness - the true meaning of artistic endevour. A truly important work.

comic book portrayal, full of errors and silliness
By Amazon Customer
This is a silly book, more like a comic book. It bears very little resemblance to the reality of Snake Valley. I've lived in Snake Valley since 1974 and I kept shaking my head, then my fist, at the comic book portrayal of the land and the people here. The author exhibits no understanding of geography here. An example of slipshod research or editing: Snake Valley is on the west side of Utah, near the border with Nevada. In one scene he describes Wendover, which is split by the Utah-Nevada border, as being on the Colorado-Utah border -- 270 miles away, on the other side of the state. You could figure that out by googling Wendover Utah. If, as an author, you cared. That's one of the most glaring errors but there is way more wrong about this book that there is right. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

Parallel universe, skewed
By Amazon Customer
I have lived in Snake Valley (Partoun) for 40 years. I have been involved with the Las Vegas water grab since 2004. I've been reading since before either. This book is awful. On all levels (unless, perhaps, if you are a fanatic "stick it to the man" conspiracy type). The story reads like a comic book. The setting is like a parallel universe of Snake Valley and its residents -- but WAY out of whack and silly. If you want to know about the water grab, search the web for Great Basin Water Network. If you want to know more about Snake Valley, search for Protect Snake Valley blog. Just about any information you find with a simple search will be infinitely better than what this book provides, and probably at least as entertaining. I wish I could give it a lower rating.
